Habitation, Recreation, Work and Traffic, 2010
Mixed textiles, textile print, textile paint, foam rubber and wire.
With inspiration from the modernist urban planning I have created 4 different garments/sculptures; each one representing an element of: Habitation, Recreation, Work and Traffic. The visual representation is a comment on the classic idea of the four essential elements. The number of four in speaking of elements (for example such as earth, fire, water and wind) has been frequently used in western civilization and has a strong, sometimes religious meaning.
In western society today, we live under different conditions with different needs which are still under constant change. In the debate about urban planning there is a discussion regarding how much versus how little the collective state gets to meddle in the life of the individual, and how much trust should be put into the individuals´ ability to make rational decisions.
The idea of Utopia where we all can live in peace side by side, is constant throughout history of Man.
Today we live in the remnants of such ideal plans, meanwhile we are constantly reinventing new ones for ourselves.
